Analysis of: 'Exposing the Ugly Truth About Poverty in Canada By: Jacquie Ackerly, Women's Health'10/17/2016 For years several anti poverty groups have been actively working towards ending poverty in Canada but have been shut down by every level of government and have been told that they are ‘misinformed’ and the government is ‘in the process’ of changing things. The truth is that this government cares more about their reputation as a wealthy nation and less about making efficient efforts to end poverty. Currently in Canada, there are more food banks than McDonalds but nearly all are nearly empty due to the several people that rely on them and the minimal support that they get. Canadians are very well educated about the poverty rates around the world and the efforts being made to fix them however, we are so clueless about our own poverty. ⅕ children in Canada live in poverty and yet when asked,67% of Canadians voted that poverty is ‘not an issue’ in Canada. This article covers the government systems and strategies that influence poverty in Canada. This article is arguing that the Canadian government is ignoring this issue and refuses to make significant changes in order to fix this issue. Although many aspects of this article are credible as they are a primary example of what people against poverty go though, this fact also makes it somewhat biased. This article is written by an advocate for change who has protested poverty and gone up against the Canadian government several times. Although the exaggerations of lack of government involvement are based on fact that are extremely hyperbolic. This article highlights an issue which affects the citizens of Canada as the lack of awareness being raised by the government about this issue, leads to several hundred people across Canada”s conditions not improving. It also creates a bit of unrest as citizens begin to wonder what other issues the government is choosing to exclude from their narrative. The above images are from the G20 protests of 2010 in Toronto which started off as peaceful protests, protesting a plethora of similar issues one of which was poverty. Why it was shut down as violently as it was and why there were no follow up explanations, is still unexplained.

An alarming 28.6% of children live in poverty in Toronto as of 2016. These numbers are followed by the 25% of children living in poverty in Montreal and the 22% of people under 18 living in impoverished conditions in Hamilton. Of the 140 neighbourhood neighbourhoods in Toronto, approximately 20 have poverty rates over 40%. These statistics demonstrate worse conditions then several developing nations. No active plans are being made to change these conditions in the near future because officials refuse to accept poverty as an issue in Canadian society. If this problem doesn't get fixed, experts are predicting Toronto’s 28.6% of children living in poverty to jump up to 30% by 2018. This article focuses on child poverty in Toronto: arguably the most famous city in Toronto. The article proves that the increasing poverty rate is going to lower Canada’s standard of living drastically by the year 2030. This article also proves that when 100 Canadians were asked if poverty was an issue in Canada, only 37% of Canadians said yes. As a country which greatly values knowledge and equity, the fact that so many of us have no knowledge of these facts, proves how gargantuan of an issue this really is. That combined with the fact that citizens have been waiting for a “Poverty Reduction Strategy” that hasn't been discussed since 2012, launches poverty in Canada to become an increasingly urgent topic. This article is not biased as it is from a very credible source and uses facts to prove its arguments. This problem affects the citizens of Toronto especially the new mayor of Toronto tremendously. Not only does the new mayor have to deal with the inane transportation problem in Toronto but, as the population of Toronto increases dramatically (as it is predicted to) over the next decade, poverty rates will also increase. This is a photo portraying who poverty affects most in Toronto. This picture contradicts the stigma that only adults who have made poor money choices end up in poverty in this part of the world. This is a very powerful image with a very powerful story behind it. When told that this woman lived in a neighbourhood with a 63% poverty rate, malnourished conditions and has to work 2 full time jobs (including seamstress as pictured above), every participant in the survey guessed a developing country. This woman belongs to a neighbourhood in Toronto.Analysis of : 'Half of First Nations children live in poverty Amber Hildebrandt - CBC News'10/17/2016 Canada is a privileged country. In this country, we pity countries such as: Peru, in which 25.8 % of the population live in poverty because we don't know that a staggering 50% of First Nation’s people live below the poverty line in this country. The conditions of these people include, little or no access to clean drinking water, overcrowded and structurally unsafe homes and lack of opportunity to education. Aboriginal people face some of the most workplace discrimination leading the average income of a First Nation’s person to $15000 as compared to the average $50000 brought in by other Canadians. To bring every First Nations child up to the poverty line would require just about $1 billion from the Canadian Government. The main problem is the lack of acknowledgement and lack of awareness raised about these people and their conditions. Canada is a highly rich and accepting country, but not for all. This article focuses on the poverty rate among First Nations children, comparing their living conditions to other Canadian children and children across the world in developing countries. This article proves that ½ First Nation’s children are condemned to an insubstantial quality of life without many government or social assistance whereas, 1/10 Canadian children face unsatisfying conditions which are still not as harsh as the conditions faced by First Nations children. For example: the cycle of abuse which started from residential schoolings has now escalated to First Nations Children facing more physical, sexual and physical abuse than any other race in North America. First Nations women are illegally trafficked and several disappearances have gone uninvestigated. That is just a sample of the atrocious conditions faced by these children. This article does not appear biased due to the fact it is from an extremely credible source and it is proving it’s arguments with thoroughly researched facts. The article convinces readers to take the side which is against poverty as it is a humanitarian issue which affects all Canadians. This issue is crucial because, it includes much of what we value as a community. We value security, freedom, equality and trust between citizens and the government in Canadian society. We also value staying educated about facts around the world. The fact that there is rampant poverty in Canada which is targeting a certain race and the majority of Canadians are unaware that this is happening, violates all of those values. Picture of First Nations children protesting their impoverished conditions. This picture is very important because, it represents the inequality which still exists in Canada. It is also important because, it represents the fact that they refuse to stay silent any more. |
